Formula and method

Resin weight = volume × density × cavity count.

Worked example

85 cm³ × 1.05 g/cm³ × 2 cavities = 178.5 g per shot.

Source solid density and volume deliberately

Use the exact grade data sheet or a validated finished-part measurement for solid density, and a CAD or measured part volume on the same definition. Record conditioning or moisture state when it affects the part measurement.

Use mass in the next calculation

Send part mass to Material Cost Per Part; add cold runners separately for a full shot. Use Shot Volume only when you have a melt-density basis.

Sanity check against a scale

For an available molded part, compare this estimate with a repeatable weighed sample. A large difference can expose the wrong grade, CAD volume, cavity count, or material condition.

This tool provides an estimate for planning and education. It does not replace machine maker limits, material data sheets, mold trials, cavity-pressure data, process validation, or qualified engineering review.

FAQ

Does the result include the runner?

Only if the entered volume represents it. For a cold-runner shot, calculate or weigh runner mass separately and add it explicitly.
